Stiegler’s Commentary on Simondon

 Stiegler’s Commentary on Simondon in Chapter 2 Section 10 of T&T 4

Stiegler connects, development in thought since the emergence of the concept of entropy with various attempts to formalise the human and social sciences, in Technics and Time 4 . In regard to the latter, he has identified Simondon and it brings to mind that whilst Simondon is known for his insights into what constitutes human individuation, his initial motive was to bring an overarching approach to the study of human behaviour both individually and as a group.

Then, in broad terms, Stiegler specifically laments the loss of interest in connecting entropy to broader issues of life on earth because he believes that entropy should change how we think about ontology [the nature of being]  in many spheres. He suggests that thought has been sidetracked by the ‘techno-logical performativity of the computational theory of information’. And that this sidetracking is limiting knowledge development in ‘mathematics, physical and scientific forms in general’. He says that

none have grasped that exosomatic artifacts in general and communicational and informational artifacts in particular are tertiary retentions constituting a new form of life.

So, Stiegler is confirming that we are confronted with a duality of failure

  • Failure to connect Entropy with our thinking

  • Failure to connect “ Human created tertiary retentions constituting a new form of life” with our thinking.
